CLIENT: Arts University Bournemouth

LOCATION: Bournemouth, UK

The Arts University Bournemouth appointed CRAB to design a new Innovation Hub situated on a compact infill site between their administration block and the main workshop. The facility accommodates start-up teams on a series of ‘focus pads’ that rise up through the building, illuminated by strategically placed light shafts to avoid a deliberate hierarchy of scale. Side windows are thoughtfully arranged to focus upon key positions on the pads, subtly distinguishing different start-up teams through light.

The building’s structure comprises a range of interdependent CLT (cross-laminated timber) panels, forming cones that serve as walls, floors, and roofs. These panels will be treated with pigmented polymer sheeting on the exterior.

Colour plays a significant role in the building’s visual identity, with exterior and key interior surfaces washed in varying tones of orange that vary according to the direction of the plane. This jolt of colour allows the building to stand out amongst its neighbours. It is a sunny, seaside building and a punctuation to the otherwise monochromatic blocks either side.
