CLIENT: Arts University Bournemouth

LOCATION: Bournemouth, UK

COLLABORATOR: Sir Peter Cook

Established in 1885 as a specialist institution, Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is a leading university providing high-quality education in art, design, media, and performance across the creative industries.

AUB successfully secured funding from the government’s Local Growth Fund to establish the Innovation Studio, designed as a hub for creative small business start-ups, many of which are AUB graduates. The studio offers flexible workspaces along with access to cutting-edge digital and physical equipment for creative design and manufacturing. The two-story interior features a top-lit central skylight lantern with a void underneath, visually connecting the upper and lower levels. The experimental technology and the workshop machinery spaces are located on the ground floor, with the 3D print suite placed in the projecting ‘nose’ of the building.

Externally, the building is bathed in orange and yellow tones, setting it apart from its surroundings and casting a warm, reflected light into the spaces between neighbouring structures. The building’s design includes a variety of differently shaped windows, complemented by ‘eyelid’ shutters that allow users to adjust their level of privacy or exposure as needed.
