LOCATION: Carbrooke, United Kingdom

Carbrooke Village is a re-wilding project using local landscape forms and fauna to re-conceive the traditional housing development. Taking historic field patterns as a starting point, the scheme places landscape at the heart of a new community.

A new Village Green and pond are located at the centre. Primary roads follow historic hedgerow patterns whilst green fingers branch off, creating shared gardens to the front of houses with play, picnic tables and ping pong.

Different character areas and housing typologies cater to multiple demographics. Clusters of houses each with their own front and back garden are mixed with landscaped cul-de-sacs that create safe streets for play.

The village hall is re-imagined as a multipurpose space, made viable with co-working spaces, a café and parcel collection centre. With the understanding of the rural context, the project carefully calibrates levels of privacy and openness to create a new type of village community in a verdant local landscape.
