CLIENT: Projektgesellschaft Wirtschaftsuniversitaet Wien GmbH

LOCATION: Austria

CRAB designed the Department of Law and Central Administration for the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), following a three-stage competition process. CRAB was also responsible for the surrounding masterplan as well as the characterful interior design of the building with its bespoke loose furniture.

A series of terraced garden decks form the roof of the Law Library and connect the open spaces of the university’s central court with the nearby Prater Gardens. Percolating into the library spaces are a series of private study capsules, lit by lighting cones above. The plan form of the Law building zig-zags in and out, creating ‘sunshine corners’, bringing natural light into the whole building

Generous, undulating meeting spaces combine with balconies and terraces, reflecting CRAB’s emphasis on a strong social as well as academic function. The bold colour brings life to the campus and is in a deliberate response to the many grey days of Vienna’s autumn and winter. The building was voted by students as the best working space on campus.
