LOCATION: Rakvere, Estonia

CRAB was awarded fourth place in this open competition held by the City of Rakvere in Estonia for the extension of St Paul’s church and the replanning of the adjacent Vabaduse Square.

The project included the conversion of the church from a sports venue into a multifunctional public building, featuring a state-of-the-art concert hall to showcase the works of Arvo Pärt and other Estonian classical music luminaries. A sheet music archive was also part of the scheme, providing a resource for future generations of musicians. The design plays with light and the mounding of embankments to provide visual articulation during the many grey days and providing shelter from the wind. The resultant scheme is a dynamic venue for cultural events, concerts and other public functions.

Integral to CRAB’s design was the creation of a swirling, verdant landscape, tying the scheme together and providing a park for the city. The scheme enriched the public space and the cultural vibrancy of Rakvere.
