CLIENT: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

LOCATION: KSA

COLLABORATOR: Populous

CRAB collaborated with sports specialists Populous to develop the competition-winning design for a new stadium in Saudi Arabia. The stadium features a vortex-like canopy that draws inspiration from traditional elements such as a whirling dancer’s skirt, the cascading sands of a desert sandstorm, and a spreading crown sitting gently atop the centre of Sport City. This glittering vortex symbolises the vibrancy of the local dance and the energy of sport.

The petal elements forming the podium’s canopy play a crucial role in mediating the experience for both approaching visitors and those within the podium. These elements maintain a level of detail that allows them to be appreciated both as part of a broader context and as individual elements of beauty. This dual interpretation is essential for the space to function as a spectacular environment during large events with crowds, as well as during quieter periods when smaller groups gather beneath the intricate canopy.
