CLIENT: Shanghai Expo

LOCATION: Shanghai, China

CRAB designed a pair of mixed-use towers on the former site of the Shanghai Expo, with the massing and form of the towers primarily shaped by planning regulations. In response, the focus of the design shifted towards the sculptural refinement of both internal spaces and the external envelope.

The lobby is formed by carving into the building’s base, bringing the lobby space deep into the building. The carved shapes at the base serve as structural forms, while carved-out areas at the top provide vistas from the VIP areas.

Incorporating intelligent active skins, one of the buildings features kinetic elements at the scale of louvres, while the other employs sandwich glass panels with electrochromic properties. These elements contribute to the adaptability of the building’s exterior, responding dynamically to climatic conditions.
