LOCATION: Taichung, Taiwan

A series of competitions were conducted by the municipality of Taichung for the design of a landmark high-rise building. This tower is the first version of two algae-producing high-rise buildings designed by CRAB.

The entire tower is inspired by the creation of energy. Living energy which must be made visible, symbolising the energy, enterprise and inventive optimism of the Taiwanese people. The droplets are the primary elements of this process. Their activity, presence and form resonate throughout the scheme.

The tower features a series of steel cages that will be covered in algae to produce biofuel. In the basic tower we provide a 10,888 m2 surface of algae which produces 3,266,400 litres of oil and produces several thousand tonnes of biomass in a year. The same structure could be further developed – doubling the surface area and thus creating 6,532,800 litres of oil.
